Royals Bolster Pitching Staff with Randy Dobnak Acquisition
The Kansas City Royals have made a strategic move to enhance their pitching lineup by acquiring Randy Dobnak from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations. This decision comes shortly after the Royals secured pitcher Connor Seabold from the Toronto Blue Jays, also for cash and a minor league player.
Both Dobnak and Seabold will be added to the Royals' 40-man roster. To accommodate their entry, the team has placed pitchers Carlos Estévez and Cole Ragans on the 60-day Injured List. While Estévez has been sidelined for over 60 days, Ragans will now be unavailable until at least July 7.
During his rookie season with the Minnesota Twins, Dobnak showcased his potential with a remarkable 1.59 ERA over 28.1 innings. However, his performance has declined since then, leading to a career ERA of 4.86 across 140.2 innings, with a modest strikeout rate of 5.4 per nine innings. This year, he recorded a 4.24 ERA in 13 Triple-A starts and had a clause in his contract that required the Mariners to offer him to other teams for a spot on their 40-man roster. He has options available and has now been assigned to Triple-A Omaha.
Seabold, who debuted for the Royals against the Nationals just hours after his acquisition, is now with his third team this season. The 30-year-old has a mixed track record in the majors, holding a 7.25 ERA in 139 innings over five seasons with various teams, but has shown improvement this year with a 4.05 ERA in 20 innings since joining Kansas City.
The recent roster changes come amid a spate of injuries affecting the Royals’ pitching staff. Ragans is undergoing further examination for discomfort, while other pitchers like Daniel Bubic and Seth Lugo are also dealing with setbacks. With the current state of the team’s pitching depth, highlighted by high ERAs in their minor league affiliates, the Royals are actively seeking reinforcements to strengthen their rotation.
