Ryder Cowan Shines in U.S. Open Debut, Ties for Second Place

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Ryder Cowan, a talented amateur golfer, demonstrated impressive skills during his debut at the U.S. Open, showcasing his potential on the prestigious Shinnecock Hills course. The 21-year-old, who is gearing up for his senior year at Oklahoma, made a strong impression as he briefly held the lead and concluded the first round with a commendable 2-under 68, matching the lowest score by an amateur at this venue.

Midway through his round on Thursday, Cowan found himself at 3-under par and noticed his name rising on the leaderboard. "Through nine, I looked up and I was 3-under par," he remarked, reflecting on his performance. Despite facing a few challenges on the back nine, he finished his round on a high note, sinking a five-foot birdie putt on the ninth hole just before play was halted due to darkness.

Cowan's strong start included three birdies in his first eight holes, propelling him to the top of the leaderboard momentarily after a birdie on the par-3 17th. "I feel like I started well. I got some momentum from that," he explained, emphasizing his focus and preparation leading up to the tournament. He is currently positioned four shots behind leader Wyndham Clark and is in contention to become the first amateur to finish a U.S. Open round in the top five since Brian Campbell in 2015.

To qualify for the U.S. Open, Cowan secured his spot with a remarkable 6-under 138 at BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, winning a playoff for one of the two available spots. His fellow qualifier, 17-year-old Miles Russell, also performed admirably, finishing the day at 2-over while competing alongside three-time major champion Padraig Harrington.

Adapting to the crowd at Shinnecock was a new experience for Cowan, who noted the stark contrast to the quieter atmosphere of his home course. "I’ve really just been trying this week to focus on each shot," he said, underscoring his commitment to maintaining concentration amidst the bustling environment. If he continues to play at this level, Cowan may find himself with a significant following as the tournament progresses.
