Sabalenka and Osaka Set for Thrilling French Open Showdown

Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka, both four-time Grand Slam champions, will clash for the third time this season on Monday in a highly anticipated match that marks the return of women's night sessions at the French Open for the first time in three years. As the tournament progresses, several male players are also vying for their first major quarter-final appearances.

Ranked as the world's top player, Sabalenka faces a challenging path as she seeks her first title at Roland Garros, especially after her heartbreaking defeat to Coco Gauff in last year’s final. Meanwhile, Osaka has made significant strides, reaching the last 16 at the French Open for the first time in her career and appearing more comfortable than ever on the clay courts of Paris.

This will be the fourth encounter between these two prominent athletes, all taking place at the round of 16 stage in various tournaments. Osaka won their initial meeting during her run to the 2018 US Open title, but they did not compete again until this year. Sabalenka triumphed over Osaka in straight sets at Indian Wells and later came back from behind to win at the Madrid Open.

The winner of this match will advance to face either former Australian Open champion Madison Keys or Russian qualifier Diana Shnaider. Sabalenka expressed her admiration for Osaka, stating, “It's great, great to see her back on her level. Maybe not at her best level, but she's back, she's fighting, she's building her level.” Osaka, who took a break from tennis in 2023 to give birth, also commented on her aspirations for this clay season, noting, “I want to keep going. I just want to keep focusing on every match.”

In the men's draw, the landscape is wide open following the unexpected exits of top players like Jannik Sinner. The highest-ranked competitor remaining in the top half is world number six Felix Auger-Aliassime, who aims to reach his first French Open quarter-final against Chilean Alejandro Tabilo. American Zachary Svajda, who had limited Grand Slam success prior to this tournament, noted the opportunity presented by the open draw, saying, “I try to stay present and stay positive.”

As the tournament progresses, other notable matches include former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini facing Juan Manuel Cerundolo, and Frances Tiafoe taking on Matteo Arnaldi.
