Saugatuck Teams Celebrate District Titles in Soccer and Baseball

The Saugatuck girls' soccer team triumphed in a nail-biting shootout against Black River, clinching the Division 4 district championship with a 2-1 victory on Saturday, May 30. This marks the second consecutive playoff win for the Trailblazers, who will now face St. Joseph Western Michigan Lutheran in the regional semifinals at Fennville High School on Tuesday, June 2, at 7 p.m. The other semifinal match will see Kalamazoo Christian take on Western Michigan Christian at 5 p.m.

In addition to their success on the soccer field, Saugatuck's baseball team also emerged victorious against Black River, winning the district title decisively with a score of 16-1 in just three innings. Earlier in the tournament, the Trailblazers defeated Bloomingdale 11-0 in the semifinals, while Black River secured their spot in the finals by overcoming Fennville 7-5. Saugatuck's baseball squad will next meet Kalamazoo Christian in the Division 3 regional semifinals, scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, at 4:30 p.m.

On the baseball front, the West Ottawa team faced a tough loss, narrowly falling to Jenison 5-4 in the Division 1 district semifinals. Zeeland West also experienced disappointment, losing 9-4 to Hudsonville, which later claimed the district title by defeating Jenison 6-4 in an eight-inning showdown.

In softball, Hamilton's Bella Goetsch threw a perfect game, striking out 12 batters and leading her team to a 10-0 win over Holland in the Division 2 district semifinals. However, Hamilton could not maintain their momentum and lost 7-3 in the finals to Unity Christian, with Kelsey Mersman taking the loss. Meanwhile, Zeeland West fell 6-4 to powerhouse Hudsonville in their district semifinal.

The Fennville softball team advanced to the finals after defeating Delton Kellogg 1-0 by forfeit in the Division 3 semifinals, but ultimately lost to Covenant Christian with a score of 11-1.

These results highlight the competitive spirit and resilience of local high school teams as they vie for titles in the playoffs.
