Scranton Prep's Athletic Director Grey Simpson Resigns to Pursue New Opportunities

Grey Simpson, who has served as the athletic director at Scranton Prep for four years, is resigning to take on teaching and coaching roles at Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. The school administration praised his contributions, highlighting his "leadership and service to the Prep community" in a statement released on Friday.

At Woodberry Forest, an all-boys institution, Simpson will teach chemistry, work as the defensive coordinator for the football team, and assume the head coaching position for the track and field program. "This is a great opportunity,” Simpson remarked. “I loved the administrative work of athletic director, but at the core of who I am is being a teacher and coach. I am excited to get back on the football sideline and lead the track program, which has been a source of pride at the school."

During his tenure at Scranton Prep, Simpson played a vital role in advancing the school’s athletic programs, advocating for scheduling contests beyond the Lackawanna League and District 2. “I came to the job at Scranton Prep with a different type of background, coming from an independent boarding school,” he explained. “I felt that getting our teams out there to experience different levels of competition would be beneficial.”

Simpson plans to assist Scranton Prep through the summer and help with the transition into the upcoming athletic season. The search for his successor will be announced in the coming weeks. Principal Kris Cupillari acknowledged Simpson's impact, stating, "Grey has been a wonderful leader, mentor, and advocate for our student-athletes.”

In addition to scheduling enhancements, Simpson oversaw significant upgrades to the athletic facilities, including the installation of lights at the Loyola Athletic Complex. He also played a key role in securing an agreement for the football team to play home games on Friday nights at Dunmore High School’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Scranton Prep President Fr. A.J. Rizzo, S.J., emphasized Simpson's broader influence, stating, “His leadership has extended far beyond the playing fields, cultivating a culture where athletics serve as an extension of our educational mission.”
