Seahawks Minicamp Highlights: Zach Charbonnet’s Recovery and Devon Witherspoon’s Dominance

As the Seattle Seahawks kicked off their mandatory minicamp, excitement filled the air, especially regarding running back Zach Charbonnet's unexpected presence. Just four months post-surgery for a torn ACL, Charbonnet was spotted engaging in light drills on the practice field. Dressed casually in a hoodie and sweatpants, he demonstrated high-knee hurdles and lateral movements under the guidance of a trainer while his teammates prepared for practice.

This marked the first time reporters had seen Charbonnet on the field since his injury during the divisional playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers on January 17. Following reconstructive knee surgery in mid-February, his return to the field comes as a pleasant surprise. Coach Mike Macdonald has been somewhat vague about Charbonnet's recovery timeline, although he expressed cautious optimism about the running back's progress earlier this year, stating, “If you’re betting on anybody, you’re going to bet on Zach.”

Charbonnet's situation is particularly interesting as he enters the final year of his rookie contract, which he signed after being drafted in the second round out of UCLA in 2023. With fellow running back Kenneth Walker departing for the Kansas City Chiefs after winning the Super Bowl MVP, the Seahawks selected running back Jadarian Price from Notre Dame in the first round this season. This shift in the roster dynamics could mean a significant role for Charbonnet, especially as he gradually returns to form.

Meanwhile, Price has been actively competing for playing time, sharing duties with veteran George Holani, who has impressed coaches after stepping in during the playoffs last season. Holani took initial snaps with the first team, while Price also received valuable experience with the starters during the minicamp. Additionally, new signing Emanuel Wilson has been making an impact as the third running back, demonstrating a powerful running style.

In the defensive lineup, cornerback Devon Witherspoon showcased his skills and intensity throughout the minicamp. Fully engaged in scrimmages, he was vocal on the field, even playfully challenging teammates during drills. Witherspoon is anticipated to be a key player as he awaits a substantial contract extension, potentially setting the record for his position. As the Seahawks prepare for the upcoming season, both Charbonnet’s recovery and Witherspoon’s performance will be vital to the team’s success.
