Sean Sweeney Poised to Lead Orlando Magic as New Head Coach

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Sean Sweeney's ascension to head coach was anticipated, and now it has become a reality as he prepares to take the reins of the Orlando Magic. San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson expressed his excitement over Sweeney's new role, confirming that the two parties have reached a preliminary agreement, although the Magic have not yet officially announced the deal.

“Thrilled for Sean. He deserves it," Johnson remarked on Saturday, prior to the Spurs' Game 7 matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference finals. He emphasized that Sweeney's promotion to head coach was always a matter of "when, not if," highlighting the many opportunities Sweeney has had to step into such a role.

In his first full season as head coach of the Spurs, Johnson had brought Sweeney on board as associate head coach last summer. Tasked with improving the team's defense, Sweeney's efforts were instrumental in the Spurs' significant turnaround, with standout rookie Victor Wembanyama earning the title of Defensive Player of the Year.

Spurs guard Devin Vassell also praised Sweeney's contributions, stating, "The impact that he’s had here has been tremendous." Vassell noted Sweeney's commitment to raising the team's defensive standards, wishing him success in his new position.

Before his tenure with the Spurs, Sweeney built his career as a video coordinator for the New Jersey Nets, subsequently serving as an assistant coach with several teams, including the Bucks, Pistons, Mavericks, and Spurs. Johnson added, “Happy for Orlando, and happy for us as he’s in the Eastern Conference. But thrilled for Sean. It’s going to be a really good fit and well deserved.”
