Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's Influence May Shape Lu Dort's Future with OKC Thunder

Following their defeat to the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, the Oklahoma City Thunder are gearing up for potential roster changes. With long-term contracts for Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams about to commence, general manager Sam Presti and his team face pivotal decisions regarding player retention.

The Thunder have team options for both Isaiah Hartenstein and Lu Dort. Opting to decline these could provide the organization with additional salary cap flexibility. While Gilgeous-Alexander has indicated that he may refrain from influencing these choices, it’s likely that Presti will consult him on critical matters this offseason.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Lu Dort have been integral to the Thunder's journey since 2019, sharing the ups and downs of the franchise. However, Gilgeous-Alexander is currently viewed as the only player deemed untouchable by the Thunder, which places him in a unique position when it comes to Dort’s potential exit.

Releasing Dort could be a strategic move for the Thunder, allowing them to allocate funds toward other player acquisitions. Dort's recent performance has not matched his earlier effectiveness, particularly with the emergence of Cason Wallace as a formidable defender. ESPN's Tim MacMahon noted, “I was told, though, that Shai was playing a little bit coy there. He will at least remind Sam Presti and the Thunder management just how much he values having Lu Dort as his teammate.”

Gilgeous-Alexander's close friendship with Dort, reinforced by their shared experiences both in Oklahoma City and on Team Canada, adds complexity to the decision. While sticking with Dort has its advantages, there remains the possibility of revising his contract with the front office, although this path could become complicated as Dort seeks a more lucrative deal.
