Soriano Shines Early, Angels Dominate Rays in 8-0 Victory
ANAHEIM, Calif. — José Soriano showcased his talent on the mound, delivering an impressive five-inning performance that propelled the Los Angeles Angels to an 8-0 triumph over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday night. Despite his strong showing, Soriano's outing concluded prematurely after he faced a hard-hit comebacker to his chest early in the game. He managed to complete five shutout innings, allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out five, all on just 76 pitches.
Although he initially continued pitching after the incident, Soriano reported feeling tightness in his chest and soreness in his legs as the game progressed. “We wanted to kind of be cautious to him," said Angels manager Kurt Suzuki. "I mean, it was smoked right off his, I think it was his chest, his right side. Didn't want to take a chance, gave us five good innings, and I felt like that was the right time to get him out of there.” Soriano expressed optimism about his health, expecting to make his next scheduled start.
Entering this game with a troubling 5.28 ERA over his last eight starts, Soriano adopted a different strategy. Typically reliant on his sinker, which he throws 26% of the time, he instead leaned heavily on his secondary pitches. His splitter was particularly effective, used 34% of the time and generating a 31% swing-and-miss rate. He also made good use of his knuckle curve, which resulted in four swings and misses out of seven attempts. This performance lowered his season ERA to 2.79.
Offensively, the Angels ignited their bats in the later innings, initially taking a 1-0 lead thanks to a groundball error by Rays shortstop Taylor Walls that allowed Jo Adell to score in the fourth. In the sixth, Adell and Nolan Schanuel hit back-to-back singles, setting the stage for rookie Denzer Guzman, who delivered a pivotal two-out, two-strike single that brought home two runs. Donovan Walton then added an RBI double, extending the lead to 4-0.
The Angels continued their offensive onslaught in the seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Jose Siri and another two-run single from Guzman. Walton capped off the scoring with a single that drove in Schanuel. The Angels' lineup amassed 15 hits overall, with Adell achieving his second four-hit game of the week. “All the way through the lineup, everybody was convicted in a plan and really found a way to execute all the way through,” Adell remarked. “This is one of the most complete games I've been a part of.”
In relief, the trio of Samy Natera Jr., Brent Suter, and Kirby Yates combined to pitch four scoreless innings. With their bullpen's ERA now sitting at 2.81 over the last 20 games, Suzuki praised Natera’s confidence and the effectiveness of his veteran relievers. “It was a good, complete game,” he concluded.
