Stamenic Aims to Honor His Father as New Zealand Returns to the World Cup
Marko Stamenic's journey to the World Cup has deep emotional roots, tracing back to when he was just eight years old, watching New Zealand's last World Cup campaign with his father. Now, as a talented midfielder for Swansea City, he is set to represent the All Whites once again on football's grandest stage, as they prepare to face Iran in their Group B opener in Los Angeles.
Sadly, Stamenic's father, Nikola, who played a pivotal role in his football career, passed away unexpectedly last October. Reflecting on this loss, Stamenic shared, "He was the best man I will ever know," highlighting the profound impact his father had on his life. Even now, as he steps onto the field, Stamenic feels his father's presence, saying, "I don't really think he's not with us, in a way." He added, "I hope we're making him proud."
This World Cup marks New Zealand's first appearance in the tournament since 2010, following a series of draws in South Africa that ended their campaign in the group stage. Stamenic reminisced about watching those matches and expressing his dreams to play for his country on such a significant platform. "I'm over the moon that the chance has come," he remarked.
Despite being the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, Stamenic is hopeful about New Zealand's chances. He believes they can advance from a challenging group that includes Egypt and Belgium, stating, "I think with the new format, possibly a win could get you through the group." His optimism is bolstered by a strong performance in his club season, where he made 38 appearances and scored three goals.
Stamenic's football journey took him from the Under-17 World Cup in 2019 to playing across Europe, including stints in Denmark, Serbia, and Greece. Now, as he embraces the World Cup experience, he remains focused on honoring his father's legacy, hoping to add a World Cup triumph to his list of achievements.
