Tarik Skubal's Rehab Start Generates Excitement in West Michigan

This Sunday is shaping up to be quite the event in West Michigan, as Tigers pitcher and two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal prepares to take the mound for a rehab start with the Whitecaps at LMCU Ballpark in Comstock Park. Skubal, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow in early May, will return to action for the first time since April 29. His recovery has progressed significantly, allowing him to potentially rejoin the Tigers' rotation sooner than originally anticipated.

While tickets for the matchup against the Dayton Dragons on Sunday are sold out, the high demand is not solely due to Skubal’s appearance. The game had already reached maximum capacity before the Tigers announced his rehab start on Friday. Some fans have turned to resale platforms like StubHub, where ticket prices have soared into the hundreds, with front-row seats behind home plate listed for over $2,000.

In preparation for the big day, the Whitecaps are making logistical adjustments to accommodate an expected influx of media coverage. The game is set to kick off at 2 p.m., though a Whitecaps representative indicated that the first pitch might be delayed slightly due to ongoing construction around the venue. Parking at LMCU Ballpark will open at 10 a.m., and gates will open at 11:45 a.m. for season ticket holders and at noon for individual ticket buyers.

The Whitecaps will also maintain their tradition of allowing fans to enjoy pre-game activities, including players signing autographs and playing catch on the field. However, Skubal will not be participating in these activities, as he will be busy warming up for his highly anticipated start.

This marks Skubal’s return to the Whitecaps since 2023, when he made two previous rehab appearances, including one at LMCU Ballpark. He initially joined the Tigers organization in 2018, being selected in the ninth round of the draft after playing at Seattle University.
