Taunton High Softball Dominates to Secure Sixth Consecutive Division 1 Title
WORCESTER— In an electrifying matchup, the No. 1 ranked Taunton High Tigers faced off against the No. 3 Attleboro Blue Bombardiers on Saturday, June 13, at Rockwood Field. This highly anticipated game showcased the talents of two formidable offenses, with Taunton ultimately emerging victorious with an 11-8 score, marking their sixth consecutive MIAA Division 1 championship and the 11th in the program's history. This contest also set a record as the highest-scoring final in MIAA softball history.
Taunton, boasting a 24-1 record and a perfect 16-0 in the Hockomock League, entered the game with a fierce determination to maintain their undefeated tournament streak. Despite an explosive start from Attleboro, who put five runs on the board in the first inning, Taunton quickly regrouped. Tigers head coach Michelle Raposo acknowledged the challenge presented by Attleboro, stating, “It’s really hard to beat a team three times… But (Taunton) is relentless. They don’t give up, they just keep responding.”
After a pitching change that brought in eighth grader Ella Parece to replace junior Grace Simmons, Taunton responded valiantly. Senior Tori Corrao ignited the Tigers’ offense with a triple on her first at-bat, eventually scoring on a fielder’s choice. Junior Bella Bourque, who would later be named Gatorade Massachusetts Softball Player of the Year, hit a two-run home run that shifted the momentum, giving Taunton a brief lead.
However, the Blue Bombardiers refused to back down. After a scoreless fourth inning, Attleboro regained the lead with a two-run homer from junior Lola Ronayne. Yet, the Tigers matched the intensity, with Corrao launching a solo home run in the fourth, followed by a series of hits that ultimately secured their lead.
In the final innings, Taunton maintained control, with key contributions from players like junior Aniyah Bailey, who drove in important runs. As the game concluded, the Tigers showcased their defensive prowess, shutting down Attleboro’s last chances to score. Coach Raposo reflected on her journey, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to coach alongside her daughter, Mia Torres. “It’s been an incredible four years… they’re resilient and want to compete and have fun,” she said.
For the players, this victory is significant, with Bailey noting the rarity of achieving six titles in a row, adding to the team's legacy. “I’m really glad we pulled it off and added to the dynasty,” she said. The triumph reinforces Taunton's status as a powerhouse in Massachusetts high school softball.
