Texas Tech Defends Integrity Amid Brendan Sorsby Controversy
Texas Tech University has made the decision that quarterback Brendan Sorsby will not participate in college football this fall, despite a recent injunction from a Lubbock County judge that had granted him eligibility. This announcement has ignited significant backlash, with other universities considering boycotts against Texas Tech, and the Big 12 filing a lawsuit involving several state attorneys general from Kansas, Utah, and Texas.
Sorsby, who previously admitted to placing bets on his own team while at Indiana in 2022, will now enter the NFL supplemental draft. In light of the uproar, Cody Campbell, Chairman of the Texas Tech University Board of Regents, issued a comprehensive letter defending the university's actions. He emphasized the institution's commitment to integrity throughout the process, stating, "The bottom line is that Texas Tech did absolutely nothing but act with complete integrity through this entire process. We broke no rules, no laws, and crossed no ethical lines."
In his letter, Campbell highlighted the university's dedication to supporting its students, especially in an evolving landscape of college athletics. He noted that Texas Tech had conducted thorough background checks on Sorsby before his enrollment and had no prior knowledge of his gambling history until months after he joined the team. Campbell also acknowledged Sorsby's accountability and the university's efforts to assist him with what has been identified as a gambling addiction, emphasizing their ongoing support for his recovery.
Importantly, Campbell clarified that the lawsuit aiming for Sorsby’s reinstatement was initiated by the student-athlete himself, with his own funding for legal expenses, and not by Texas Tech. He assured that the university would respect any judicial decisions made regarding Sorsby's case while continuing to prioritize his well-being.
Amidst ongoing challenges in college sports, Campbell expressed his concern for the current system's sustainability and reiterated his commitment to advocating for reforms that benefit student-athletes. "I have spent a great deal of time and effort working to preserve and protect every single student-athlete," he stated, underlining the importance of providing opportunities for education and personal growth through athletics.
