Tigers' James Outman Makes Historic Debut with Impressive Performance
Detroit Tigers outfielder James Outman made an unforgettable debut, impressing both fans and teammates alike. In the second inning, with one out, Outman, who was claimed by the team just a day earlier, sprinted to snag a challenging short fly ball from Cleveland Guardians' Steven Kwan. His diving catch not only showcased his athleticism but also prevented a potential run, as a runner was already on second base. Had he not made the play, Kwan might have scored on Brayan Rocchio's subsequent triple.
In his very first at-bat for the Tigers, Outman launched a remarkable 418-foot home run to right-center field at Progressive Field. This impressive feat made him only the 23rd player in franchise history to hit a home run in their inaugural at-bat with the team.
Outman, who is looking for a fresh start after a challenging season, previously experienced a breakout year with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023. However, he has struggled to regain that form, posting a 2.4 bWAR. He began the season with the Minnesota Twins but faced difficulties, resulting in a meager .156/.229/.250 batting line before being designated for assignment. To make room for Outman on the Tigers' 40-man roster, infielder Javier Baez was moved to the 60-day injured list.
Prior to their series opener against the Guardians, the Tigers made several roster adjustments, bringing in Outman along with relief pitchers Kenley Jansen and Jacob Waguespack. In corresponding moves, infielder Zack Short was designated for assignment, while relievers Beau Brieske and Brenan Hanifee were sent to Triple-A Toledo.
With a strong performance in his debut, Outman could provide the spark the Tigers need as they aim to improve their center-field defense and recover from a tough 6-22 record in May.
