Tigers Overcome Setbacks with Power Hitting Against Astros

HOUSTON – Just hours prior to the start of their series against the Houston Astros, the Detroit Tigers faced an unexpected setback as right-hander Troy Melton was ruled out due to back tightness. This change forced the team to implement a bullpen-only pitching strategy, which, despite its challenges, resulted in a solid 9-3 victory on June 15, the opening match of a three-game series at Daikin Park.

The Tigers also had to deal with another blow when second baseman Gleyber Torres left the game following a hard swing in the second inning. In a standout performance, Colt Keith launched three home runs, providing a much-needed offensive boost. Right-hander Drew Anderson took the mound first for the Tigers, delivering 2⅔ innings with one run allowed on two hits and two walks while striking out five.

Despite their struggles this season, the Tigers (30-42) are looking to close the gap with the leading Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians, currently nine games behind in the AL Central and 5½ games off the wild-card pace. The bullpen featured six pitchers, with Anderson and Jacob Waguespack allowing the three runs scored by the Astros, which were highlighted by back-to-back homers from Isaac Paredes and Jose Altuve.

At bat, the Tigers managed to strike out 18 times but compensated with their five home runs. Kevin McGonigle initiated the scoring with a solo shot in the second inning. Keith followed with two homers during the game, including a two-run blast in the eighth that extended their lead. Remarkably, Keith has now hit four home runs in his last four games after previously going without a home run in his first 62 outings this season.

The first inning saw the Tigers take a 1-0 lead without a single hit, capitalizing on walks and hit-by-pitches. Looking ahead, the Tigers will face the Astros again on Tuesday at 8:10 p.m. in what marks the second of a seven-game series over a two-week span. Left-hander Framber Valdez will pitch for the Tigers, while the Astros will counter with right-hander Hunter Brown, who has a personal connection to Detroit.
