Tigers Struggle Against Tanner Bibee, Fall to Guardians
CLEVELAND – The Detroit Tigers have had their share of victories over the Cleveland Guardians in recent seasons, including a playoff win last fall. However, they continue to struggle against Tanner Bibee, suffering a 3-2 defeat in the opening game of their series at Progressive Field. This loss drops their record to 29-41.
Newcomer James Outman provided a spark for the Tigers, hitting a solo home run early in the game. He also showcased his defensive skills with a remarkable play in center field, which gave pitcher Jack Flaherty a chance to escape a tough situation in the second inning. Unfortunately, Flaherty was unable to capitalize on the opportunity and had to exit the game after just three innings due to soreness in his left leg, marking a tough season for him at 1-8.
When facing Bibee, the Tigers often seem outmatched, struggling to make solid contact. Outman’s 418-foot blast off a 93-mph sinker in the third inning marked his first home run of the season, aligning with manager A.J. Hinch’s pre-game comments about Outman's speed and power. Spencer Torkelson added a homer in the eighth inning, bringing his season total to 11, but it was not enough to overcome Bibee’s dominance.
Flaherty faced difficulties during his brief outing, allowing two runs in the second inning, primarily due to a series of hits with two outs. Despite Outman's impressive catch, Flaherty surrendered a double and then allowed a single that drove in a run. The Guardians have proven formidable against the Tigers, winning Bibee's last nine starts against them, with the pitcher maintaining a stellar 1.58 ERA in those games.
Looking ahead, there is hope for the Tigers with the anticipated return of ace Tarik Skubal on Saturday. Skubal has been recovering from elbow surgery and recently threw five shutout innings in a rehab start. The Tigers are eager for his return as they face the Guardians again.
