Tim Payne, the New Zealand defender who captured attention during the World Cup, has announced a significant career move by signing with the Paraguayan club Club Olimpia. This transition was confirmed on Friday by his current team, Wellington Phoenix, who did not disclose the transfer fee for the player joining the 48-time champions of Paraguay.
The 32-year-old gained widespread recognition on social media in the lead-up to the World Cup after Argentinian influencer El Scarso aimed to increase the following of what he dubbed the tournament’s “least followed” player. Payne's Instagram followers surged from around 4,000 to nearly six million within a week.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Payne expressed, “This wasn't an easy decision. Seven years at Wellington Phoenix. 149 games. To the fans, my teammates, and all those who have supported me throughout my career, the highs and the lows, thank you.” He added, “To test myself at the very top of South American football, the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana, is one of the most incredible opportunities I could have asked for as a professional.”
El Scarso, whose real name is Valen Scarsini, was quick to extend his best wishes, commenting, “Best of luck brother.” Payne made his debut in New Zealand’s first World Cup match, which ended in a 2-2 draw against Iran, and the team is set to face Egypt and Belgium next in Group G.
