‘Truly extraordinary to watch’: Kamala Harris praises WNBA
Kamala Harris
Tuesday, July 30, 2024; Atlanta, Ga; Vice President Kamala Harris waves to supporters during a presidential campaign rally on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at the Georgia State Convocation Center in Atlanta, Ga.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has been outspoken in her support for the WNBA, hosting the Las Vegas Aces at the White House following their 2022 WNBA Championship. On Sunday night, she reaffirmed that support.

On Sunday, Harris was in attendance for a showdown between the Los Angeles Sparks and the Chicago Sky. After the game, she had the opportunity to speak to the Sparks in the locker room, and she had nothing but support and praise to offer the players and the league.

‘Extraordinary to watch’

Following the Sparks’ 102-87 win over the Sky, Harris went to the team’s locker room to address the players. In the brief speech, Harris lauded the growth that the WNBA has seen in recent years and congratulated the players not just on the victory in the game, but for the impact they’re making.

“You are having an incredible impact. I travel our country, young girls, boys, people of every gender, background, race, watch the W, and understand how inspiring it is,” Harris said in her speech. “So keep doing what you’re doing. You guys are impacting people who you will never meet, people who may never know your name or mine, but they are aware of what you are doing. And it is giving them a sense of their value and their dignity and what they have a right to expect from this world.

So, congratulations on this game, but congratulations as much as anything else, for the path you guys are charting. It is extraordinary to watch.”

Harris ended her speech by leading a “together” cheer with the team.

No White House Visit

While the Aces visited Harris at the White House following their 2022 championship, the current administration has not been as supportive of the WNBA.

The Aces were not invited to the White House to celebrate their championship, United States President Donald Trump, a team spokesperson told USA Today. This marks the second consecutive season that the WNBA champion did not receive an invite. In fact, Trump has never invited a WNBA champion to the White House during any of the six years of his presidency.

USA Today reported that the Aces considered visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture as an alternate way to commemorate the championship in Washington D.C. in lieu of an invitation to the White House, but they could not make it work due to scheduling conflicts.

While the Aces were not invited to the White House, the New York Knicks were invited to celebrate their NBA Championship at the White House.
