UCLA's NCAA Journey Ends Abruptly with Loss to Saint Mary's
The UCLA Bruins faced a stunning defeat in the NCAA regionals, concluding their season with a narrow 6-5 loss to Saint Mary’s. The No. 1 ranked Bruins, who had relied on dramatic walk-off victories to secure their place in the tournament, saw their luck wane on Sunday after a hard-fought match.
In a surprising turn of events, UCLA, which had previously celebrated four walk-off wins in the preceding weeks, was on the receiving end of a walk-off loss. This marked just the fifth instance in history where a top-seeded team exited the tournament at the regional level, with the Bruins falling to Saint Mary’s twice in just three days on their own field. The Bruins had to rally for a walk-off win against Virginia Tech on Saturday, but could not replicate that success when it mattered most.
UCLA entered the ninth inning with a 5-4 advantage, but after head coach John Savage opted to bring in closer Easton Hawk following a single allowed by starter Cal Randall, the Gaels tied the game. Saint Mary's catcher Ian Armstrong hit a crucial single that scored the tying run, pushing the game into extra innings.
In the 10th inning, Hawk, who was pitching for the third consecutive day, struggled, allowing two singles and a walk before Makoa Sniffen delivered the decisive hit that sent UCLA home. Despite a promising start, the Bruins' offense faltered after early runs, managing no additional scores in the final innings.
As Cal Poly prepares to face Saint Mary's for a chance to advance to the Super Regionals, the focus remains on UCLA's surprising early exit from the NCAA tournament following a remarkable regular season.
