Upcoming Isle of Man Parish Walk: Key Details for Participants
The Isle of Man's premier mass participation event is set to occur next weekend. The annual Parish Walk invites participants to tackle an impressive 85-mile (137km) course, with a challenging 24-hour deadline to complete the route. More than 1,200 individuals are anticipated to join this demanding challenge, many of whom will be fundraising for local charities throughout the event.
This year, there will be a notable change in the registration process, as sign-ups will only be conducted on a single day. Participants can register on Wednesday from 17:00 to 21:00 BST at the Secondary Hall of the National Sports Centre (NSC) in Douglas. Organizers recommend that participants be dropped off at the NSC due to limited parking availability.
To assist walkers, a "bag drop" service will be available, allowing them to transport belongings to the finish lines in Rushen and Peel at no cost. Additionally, a complimentary shuttle bus will operate between 15:30 and 18:30 on Saturday, facilitating transport for supporters traveling to Peel and returning with competitors as they finish the race.
The race begins at 08:00 on Saturday at the NSC running track, guiding participants through all 17 parishes of the island, starting with Braddan. Walkers will proceed through various towns, including Marown, Santon, and Malew, ultimately reaching Peel for those under 21. Others will continue their journey to finish at Douglas Promenade, with designated feeding stations and restrooms along the way.
Participants should take note of the event rules: wearing headphones is prohibited, and anyone who runs or jogs will face disqualification. There are strict cut-off times for reaching each parish church, with specific checkpoints allowing finishers to continue beyond certain deadlines. Road closures will be enforced to ensure the safety of all walkers, with a one-way system established in Maughold on Saturday evening.
This event not only highlights the spirit of community but also promotes physical endurance and charity support across the Isle of Man.
