Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs to the NBA Finals in 2025-26, and he's set to stick around in San Antonio for the foreseeable future.

On Friday evening, the 22-year-old reigning Defensive Player of the Year and former No. 1 pick agreed to a five-year, $252 million contract extension with the Spurs, per ESPN's Shams Charania. It's reportedly a maximum contract that features a player option for the fifth season and runs through the 2030-31 season.

Though the deal will pay Wembanyama north of $50 million per year on average, he actually took a pay cut to sign an extension in San Antonio. According to Charania, Wembanyama settled on a maximum deal rather than a supermax contract — which would have totaled $303 million — after going "through multiple frameworks" with the Spurs.

Wembanyama averaged 25 points and 11.5 rebounds this season (both career highs), earning All-Star honors for the second consecutive year. He was also named an All-NBA First-Teamer for the first time in 2026.

Where does Victor Wembanyama's new contract rank among NBA stars?

While Wembanyama's new deal is massive, it isn't a supermax contract, so several NBA superstars will still make more in terms of average annual value. Wembanyama could have become the league's second $300 million player after Jayson Tatum; instead, his new deal ranks just 24th in the NBA in AAV — below even his Spurs teammate De'Aaron Fox, per Spotrac.

In terms of total value, Wembanyama's contract ranks higher. It's the eighth-biggest contract in the league at the moment, behind Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Nikola Jokic, Donovan Mitchell, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Cade Cunningham and Evan Mobley.
