Walker Kessler Poised for Major Free Agency Following Injury-Plagued Season

The New York Knicks have claimed their first NBA championship since 1973, with Jalen Brunson earning Finals MVP honors after scoring an impressive 45 points in Game 5. As celebrations unfold in New York City, the spotlight remains on San Antonio Spurs' 22-year-old sensation Victor Wembanyama. Wembanyama, a 7-foot-4 talent, led the Spurs to a remarkable 62-win season and garnered the title of the NBA's first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year.

As teams eye the future, the need for players capable of countering Wembanyama's unique skill set has become increasingly apparent. In this context, CBS Sports analyst Sam Quinn highlighted Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler as a significant free agent prospect, ranking him fifth on his list. Kessler, who is set to become a restricted free agent, missed a large portion of the previous season due to injury. Nonetheless, Quinn noted that with the league entering the "Victor Wembanyama era," size and defensive prowess will be crucial, making Kessler's profile appealing. "There are bigger names behind him on this list, but at just 24 years old, Kessler’s market will be extensive," Quinn said.

Kessler, standing at 7 feet 2 inches, had an impressive 2024-25 season, finishing second in the NBA for blocks (2.4 per game) and fifth in rebounds (12.2 per game) while averaging 11.1 points in just 30 minutes of play. His shooting percentage from the field was an impressive 66.3%, and while he is still refining his three-point shooting, he has demonstrated some potential in that area with a career average of 54.5% on limited attempts.

However, Kessler's path forward is complicated. After undergoing shoulder surgery, he played only five games last season, and the Jazz have reportedly offered him a five-year, $140 million contract—the largest ever for a center who hasn't made an All-Star team—a proposal he has declined, believing he deserves more. As negotiations stall, Kessler faces several choices: he might sign an offer sheet from another team that the Jazz could match, pursue a sign-and-trade deal, or accept a $14.6 million qualifying offer to become an unrestricted free agent by 2027.

Interest in Kessler is growing, with teams like the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers already expressing strong desire to acquire him. Other franchises, including the Indiana Pacers, Toronto Raptors, and Golden State Warriors, have also been linked to the talented big man.
