Washington Huskies Poised to Welcome Former Marquette Coach DeAndre Haynes

The Washington Huskies are reportedly bringing in DeAndre Haynes, a former assistant coach at Marquette University, to join Danny Sprinkle's coaching team ahead of the 2026-27 basketball season. The 42-year-old Haynes has spent the last five years working alongside Shaka Smart at Marquette, contributing to the team's consistent success.

Prior to his tenure in the Big East, Haynes garnered experience in the Big Ten, serving at both Michigan from 2017 to 2019 and Maryland from 2019 to 2021, where he was part of two championship-winning squads. While the Huskies have yet to officially announce Haynes' hiring, the news was first reported by The Field of 68 and later confirmed by CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein.

It remains to be seen what specific role Haynes will assume on the staff, particularly as Quincy Pondexter's contract is set to expire in April, with no extension currently in place for the former Husky standout. This situation could present an opportunity for Haynes to step in as a replacement.

During his time at Marquette, Haynes played a key role in guiding the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Tournament every year, a feat the Huskies have not accomplished since the 2018-19 season, when they made it to the second round under former coach Mike Hopkins.

Haynes is expected to enhance the Huskies both on the court and off, likely focusing on coaching guards and improving an offense that struggled last season, ranking 11th in the Big Ten in scoring at 77.1 points per game and tied for 12th in shooting percentage at 45.8 percent. Before transitioning to coaching in 2012, Haynes had a successful six-year professional playing career in Europe.
