Watch as Trump Muscles Into Spain’s World Cup Trophy Lift — Despite Infantino’s Panicked Effort to Steer Him Off

FIFA President Gianni Infantino was caught scrambling across the stage just before Spain’s World Cup trophy lift moment after President Donald Trump lingered in the spotlight after presenting the champions with the award.

Video from the post-match ceremony showed Trump and Infantino presenting the World Cup trophy to Spain captain Rodri following Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

As Spain’s players gathered for the traditional trophy celebration, Infantino stepped away from the group while gesturing for Trump to follow. Instead, Trump remained alongside the players:

Infantino then hurried back toward Trump in an apparent effort to steer him away from the center of the celebrations, his hand gestures indicating he was prompting the president to step to his left and away from the team.

Trump, however, stayed on stage applauding as Spain lifted the trophy beside him, remaining in frame for several of the team’s victory photos.

The viral scene echoed last year’s FIFA Club World Cup presentation, when Trump also remained on stage during Chelsea Football Club’s trophy celebration after presenting the winners with their medals.

The White House posted the clip but cut the scene before the lift and Infantino’s mad dash:

Spain secured the World Cup with a 106th-minute goal from Ferran Torres in extra time after a scoreless regulation period.

Before kickoff, Trump had said he was backing Argentina, telling reporters it was “hard to bet against [Argentina striker Lionel] Messi.”
