Wayne Pivac Resumes Coaching Career with Benetton in Italy
Wayne Pivac, the former coach of the Welsh national rugby team, is set to embark on a new journey as he comes out of "semi-retirement" to lead Benetton in Italy. The 63-year-old Kiwi, who was appointed as head coach of the United Rugby Championship (URC) club back in March, will be traveling to northern Italy next week to kick off pre-season activities.
Pivac's coaching career faced uncertainty after his tenure with Wales ended following a disappointing home loss to Georgia in November 2022. After that, he spent some time coaching in Japan before returning to New Zealand, where he thought he might have concluded his coaching days. However, the opportunity at Benetton reignited his passion for the sport, leading him back to the northern hemisphere.
In a recent interview on the Scrum V podcast, Pivac shared insights into his decision to continue coaching, reminisced about his time with Wales, and reflected on how Welsh rugby might have evolved differently had the Ospreys and Scarlets merged in 2019. He has signed a contract with Benetton that extends until June 2028, with an option for two additional seasons.
To assist him, Pivac has appointed former Scarlets fly-half Rhys Patchell as his attack coach. "I know Rhys pretty well and he has got a fantastic work ethic," Pivac noted. The two share a history, having collaborated during a successful championship season with the Scarlets in 2017. Pivac believes that while there is a generational gap, their partnership will be mutually beneficial. "He'll keep me young and hopefully I'll help him in the trying moments to relax and enjoy it for what it is," he said.
Reflecting on his past, Pivac acknowledged the disappointment of his final days with Wales but expressed gratitude for his nine years in the country. "I've no regrets. I enjoyed nine years in Wales and loved every minute of it," he stated, looking forward to facing the Scarlets again in October, where he hopes to reconnect with old friends and cherished memories.
