Xander Mercurius Shines in College World Series, Leaving Family in Awe

OMAHA, NE — Xander Mercurius delivered an impressive performance on the mound, pitching 7 ⅓ innings during the Oklahoma Sooners' thrilling 4-3 victory over Georgia, advancing them to the semifinals of the College World Series. As he exited the field, his mother, Christina Mercurius, stood in the parents' section, cheering and capturing every moment on her smartphone while trying to hold back tears. She focused on the jumbotron displaying Xander's outstanding stats: six hits, three runs, two walks, and a career-high nine strikeouts.

"It's just so surreal to see him from a baby to now in college," Christina shared with The Oklahoman, amidst a crowd of 24,455 fans at Charles Schwab Field on Monday night. The Sooners are now just one win away from competing for the championship title.

Reflecting on Xander's determination, Christina recalled a pivotal moment when her four-year-old son declared he would play in Major League Baseball. Despite her attempts to convey the challenges of reaching that level, Xander remained unfazed and confident. Now, in only his fourth start at the collegiate level, he has already made a significant impact, having pitched just over 33 ⅔ innings during the regular season before stepping up as OU's No. 2 starter in the NCAA Tournament.

Coach Skip Johnson praised Xander’s toughness and skill, comparing him to two-time MLB All-Star Marcus Stroman. "His fastball command has been there for a while, he’s been up to 99 mph this year. He pitched a great game… He executed pitches when he had to execute pitches,” Johnson stated. Xander's fastball was particularly effective, consistently clocking in between 93-95 mph, which proved challenging for the Bulldogs.

After the game, Xander attributed his postseason success to Coach Johnson, who he believes has greatly influenced his development. "The guy next to me," he said, gesturing to Johnson. Christina expressed her gratitude for Johnson's humble approach during their initial visit, noting, "Skip is amazing." Meanwhile, Xander's brother, junior right-hander LJ Mercurius, supported him from the bullpen and emphasized the special bond they share on and off the field.

Next, the Sooners will take a day off before facing the winner of Georgia-Texas on Wednesday at 6 p.m. A victory would bring them just two wins away from a national championship, with Xander playing a crucial role in the team's quest.

Amid the excitement of the College World Series, Xander remains focused, often seen taking deep breaths and offering himself words of encouragement, especially glancing at his mother in the stands. "Now look at him," Christina said, her eyes welling with pride. "In the College World Series as a freshman."
