Yankees Suffer 8-5 Defeat to Blue Jays as Weathers Struggles Continue
In a disappointing outing, Ryan Weathers struggled on the mound as the New York Yankees fell to the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-5, on Friday night in Toronto. The loss ended the Yankees' four-game winning streak, with the team managing only two hits in ten chances with runners in scoring position and leaving nine players stranded on base.
Toronto's Alejandro Kirk made a significant impact in his return after a lengthy injury absence of 62 games. He kicked off his comeback by winning an ABS challenge on the very first pitch he faced. Kirk then contributed offensively, hitting a two-out double that brought home Ernie Clement and gave the Blue Jays an early 1-0 lead. Kazuma Okamoto followed suit, launching a towering 423-foot home run, extending the lead to 3-0.
Weathers, who has been struggling with his longball issues, hit a batter in the second inning, setting the stage for George Springer to hit a two-run homer that further widened Toronto's advantage. The left-handed pitcher managed to go into the fifth inning, allowing six runs from five hits and one walk while striking out two before being replaced. Over his last three starts, Weathers has given up a troubling seven home runs and 16 runs total.
The Yankees had multiple opportunities to score, particularly against Blue Jays pitcher Trey Yesavage. After loading the bases in the second, they couldn't capitalize, with J.C. Escarra striking out and Trent Grisham popping out to second base. However, in the fifth inning, Paul Goldschmidt hit a sacrifice fly to drive in a run, followed by Cody Bellinger's two-run homer, narrowing the gap.
Despite their efforts, including a two-run single from Grisham in the sixth, the Yankees fell short, struggling to make plays in crucial situations. Escarra managed to break the Yankees' catcher hitless streak in June with a double, but ultimately, the team couldn't build on their chances in the latter innings.
As the Yankees prepare for the continuation of this three-game series, they will look to rebound against the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon, with Cam Schlittler set to pitch against Kevin Gausman.
