The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a frustrating 2025 NFL season, as they dealt with injuries to key players all year, one of which was the season-ending ACL tear for Nick Bosa.
While he should be able to come back to begin the 2026 season, it's still a bit of a question as to how he'll play after coming off such a serious injury.
But, as Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer highlighted, Bosa's return will be more important than just seeing how he looks coming off injury; there is a $55 million question that the 49ers will have to make a decision on after the 2026 season.
49ers to make huge Nick Bosa decision after 2026 season
"Bosa has a big cap hit in 2027, at nearly $55 million. And yes, he's coming off a torn ACL and will turn 30 that November," Breer writes. "Next year is also the first year of the deal done in the summer of 2023 that won't be fully guaranteed from the outset-he has $1 million guaranteed for 2027. So all those points lead to a decision needing to be made."
With a massive $55 million cap hit in 2025, with just $1 million in guaranteed money, something will have to change after the 2026 season with Bosa's contract.
If Bosa were to come back and play great in 2026, he could earn himself another payday and extension to save the 49ers some cap space, and also lock Bosa in for the foreseeable future.

But if he were to struggle, then the 49ers would have a much more difficult question to answer. They can't go into 2027 with this $55 million cap hit, no matter what, so John Lynch will need to figure something out if Bosa struggles.
Do they still extend him, just on a smaller deal? And would Bosa even accept such a deal? The 49ers might also consider a trade if they can't work out a deal with Bosa, coming off a rough season.
This Bosa situation is going to be one to monitor very closely, both during the 2026 season and especially once the season is over.
A lot can change depending on how he plays, as something will be done with Bosa after the 2026 season, regardless of how he plays.
