Reds Suffer 5-2 Defeat to Royals as Santillan Struggles Again

It’s tough to watch Tony Santillan struggle on the mound for the Cincinnati Reds. A key member of the team’s bullpen when healthy, Santillan has been unable to find his rhythm over the past few weeks. Unfortunately for him, injuries to fellow pitchers Emilio Pagan, Pierce Johnson, Graham Ashcraft, and Connor Phillips have only increased the pressure on his shoulders. With fewer options available, the Reds have had little choice but to rely on him during this challenging period.

The Reds managed to tie the game 2-2 against the Kansas City Royals thanks to a late two-run homer from Blake Dunn, which came after a solid performance from Chase Burns, who pitched six innings and struck out nine batters. However, the team’s beleaguered bullpen was unable to hold the game, leading to yet another disappointing outcome.

Unfortunately, Santillan’s performance has not been up to par. Over 23 innings this season, he has recorded a troubling 6.65 ERA and allowed nine home runs, with seven of those coming since May 5. It’s disheartening to see him take the mound in the ninth inning of a close game against a struggling Royals team, only to see the situation unravel once again.

The Reds face a tough decision moving forward, as their bullpen struggles continue to hinder their ability to compete. With tight margins and the need for close wins, the reliance on a faltering bullpen has become increasingly problematic. The team has a day off on Thursday, and Rhett Lowder is set to return to the starting lineup on Sunday, but questions remain about whether these changes will provide the much-needed spark for a team missing several key pitchers for the foreseeable future.
