Ontario Sprinters Shine as Nine Athletes Claim All-Ohio Honors on Championship Day
COLUMBUS — For Ontario's Tre Fowler and Jermel Powell, the atmosphere at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium felt just like a typical practice session. The junior sprinters took their positions in the 100-meter dash, treating it as they would on familiar turf. "We do this all the time," Fowler remarked. "We're running to get better ... I'm just happy for both of us." Despite a lengthy weather delay that moved the Division III finals to 9 p.m., the excitement in the grandstand was palpable.
The duo entered the competition with identical seed times, but it was Fowler who edged out Powell, finishing in seventh place by a mere two-hundredths of a second. Powell acknowledged the friendly rivalry, saying, "That's his event. It makes me strive to get better." Both sprinters credited their coaches for their progress, with Powell expressing his gratitude for the support that helped him reach this milestone.
Meanwhile, Shelby's Gavin Baker rebounded from a disappointing high jump earlier in the day, clocking a personal best of 14.22 seconds in the high hurdles, placing fourth overall. "I'm happy I peaked at the right time, that was my best time all year," he stated, emphasizing the importance of pacing and recovery during the season.
Clear Fork's Katrina Neal also made a splash in her state debut, securing her first sub-five-minute mile after previously breaking the 11-minute barrier in the 3200-meter race. "Not being here last year, showing up and (getting on) the podium in both feels good," she shared, looking forward to future competitions.
In the high jump, Clear Fork's Davis Hoeflich sought redemption after a disappointing sophomore year. Clearing 6-feet-5, he achieved All-Ohio honors for the second time in his career. "This will push me to work harder and go further," he said, reflecting on his journey back from injury.
Additionally, Lexington senior Eli Barr fulfilled his dream of reaching the podium in pole vault, tying for eighth with a height of 13-06. "It is pretty neat," he said, though he expressed a desire to clear higher next time. Other All-Ohio honorees included Galion's Shaun Arthur and Mapleton's Savannah Beane, who both delivered impressive performances in their respective events.
