49ers Not Expected to Pursue Edge Rusher Ahead of Training Camp

Fans of the San Francisco 49ers shouldn't anticipate any additions to the edge rusher position before training camp. NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco shared insights that suggest the team is unlikely to sign either Joey Bosa or Alex Highsmith, two names often linked to San Francisco.

"I still don't think that's going to happen anytime soon," Maiocco commented, expressing skepticism about any potential moves. He specifically addressed the connection to Joey Bosa, emphasizing that despite his brother Nick's presence on the team, it’s not a strong indicator for a signing. Maiocco noted Nick Bosa's recent remarks, implying that Joey may be leaning towards retirement rather than returning to the field. "If in late May, early June, his mind is more on golf than football, it leads me to believe that there's a really good chance that he ends up retiring," he explained.

Joey Bosa, who recorded five sacks for the Buffalo Bills last season, presents uncertainty regarding his market value. General Manager John Lynch previously indicated that Bosa's price tag would likely be beyond what the 49ers can afford.

Highsmith, on the other hand, has garnered interest following a notable season with 9.5 sacks in 2025. While acquiring him might not be financially burdensome, Maiocco highlighted critical concerns: Highsmith’s injury history and the salary cap implications. He is set to earn $14.5 million this season, a figure that could hinder the team’s future financial flexibility.

With around $71 million available in cap space for 2026, the 49ers have been strategic in managing their budget. Even though the edge rusher position remains a priority, especially with injuries to key players, the organization appears satisfied with their current roster, including Sam Okuayinonu and third-round pick Romello Height. As it stands, the 49ers are preparing for training camp with their existing lineup.
