Aaron Roderick Sets High Standards for QB Bear Bachmeier Ahead of 2026 Season

In an interview at LaVell Edwards Stadium on April 3, 2026, BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming season, following a successful alumni game. The second-year starter is under the watchful eye of offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick, who has drawn inspiration from the achievements of past Cougar quarterbacks, namely Zach Wilson and Jaren Hall.

Roderick has outlined ambitious targets for Bachmeier, aiming for a completion rate of 70%, 30 touchdown passes, and fewer than 10 interceptions. “When you’re running the football well, throwing it efficiently, getting those explosive plays, that’s where the points come, and so I do expect us to take a step forward,” Roderick noted, emphasizing the importance of improvement over last year’s performance.

The benchmarks set by Wilson and Hall have been pivotal in BYU's successful offensive seasons. During Wilson’s junior year, he achieved a remarkable 73.5% completion rate and threw for 33 touchdowns with only three interceptions. Similarly, Hall's fifth-year performance included 31 touchdowns and a 66% completion rate as BYU ended the season with an 8-5 record.

Having completed 65% of his passes last season for 3,033 yards and 15 touchdowns, Bachmeier is expected to build on his previous achievements. Roderick expressed confidence in his quarterback’s potential to surpass those statistics: “I expect us to be better this year, and I’m gonna be disappointed if we’re not.”

As the 2026 season approaches, it is clear that Bachmeier will rely heavily on a strong rushing game, supported by Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, LJ Martin. “We are going to be a very balanced offense,” Bachmeier said, highlighting the depth of talent on the roster, including newcomers and returning players who will contribute to a dynamic attack.
