Adam Silver Addresses Flopping Concerns as NBA Prepares for Rule Review
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver tackled the persistent issue of flopping within the league during a recent interview ahead of Game 3 of the Finals. Recognizing flopping as a significant concern among fans and analysts alike, Silver announced that the league plans to reassess its flopping regulations during the upcoming summer league games.
Players have voiced their frustrations regarding the inconsistencies in officiating, particularly when it comes to athletes taking advantage of the rules. In the 2023-24 season, the NBA introduced a penalty for flopping, which entails a non-unsportsmanlike technical foul for the offending player, granting the opposing team a free throw. However, the application of this rule has varied over recent seasons.
Silver emphasized the need for a thorough review of flopping behaviors, stating, “When we put the flopping rule in place, there was egregious flopping. Players are taught to sell the calls where there is a foul, but they’re trying to draw the call.” He confirmed that a two-day competition committee meeting will take place in Las Vegas, where over 1,000 plays will be analyzed to determine if adjustments to the rule are necessary.
Former NBA player Charles Barkley also weighed in on the issue, acknowledging that while flopping has long been part of the game, there is room for improvement. Barkley noted that players often embellish contact to secure free throws or gain extra possessions.
In a related development, Silver also commented on President Donald Trump’s anticipated attendance at Game 3, explaining, “I found out because Jim Dolan invited him to the game, and he said yes. He’s welcome to be here.” He further highlighted the unifying power of sports in a divided society, emphasizing the importance of shared experiences.
