AI Coaches Set to Debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The countdown to the FIFA World Cup has begun, and this year's tournament promises to be historic. Kicking off on June 11 at Estadio Azteca, Mexico will face South Africa, marking the start of the 2026 World Cup, which will feature a record 48 teams and 104 matches across three host nations. Notably, this will also be the first World Cup where each team will utilize an AI coach.
Referred to as FIFA AI Pro, this innovative tool, co-developed by FIFA and Lenovo, functions more like a cloud-based coach rather than a traditional sideline presence. Unveiled at CES in January, FIFA AI Pro offers teams access to a wealth of match data, including millions of data points covering over 2,000 different metrics, allowing for real-time tactical insights presented through video, animated replays, and 3D avatars.
Teams can engage FIFA AI Pro with a variety of questions related to match strategies, such as identifying offensive weaknesses or determining the best formation against specific opponents. According to Lenovo, the AI leverages FIFA’s exclusive data, which encompasses player telemetry and historical tactical analysis, making its recommendations potentially more insightful than generic models.
This tool is particularly advantageous for smaller teams, such as Curaçao and Cabo Verde, which may lack the resources for dedicated analytics staff. For these teams, FIFA AI Pro serves not just as a supplement but effectively fills the gap of an entire analytics department at no cost. However, as this is the inaugural year for this technology, its true impact on match outcomes remains to be seen.
While all teams will have access to the same analytics, the challenge will lie in interpretation and implementation, emphasizing the vital role of human coaches in decision-making. As FIFA President Gianni Infantino hinted at CES, there are aspirations for this technology to eventually reach fans, potentially revolutionizing how the game is experienced at all levels.
