South Korean Goalkeeper Regrets Missing Daughter's Birth for World Cup Duty
Kim Seung-gyu, the 35-year-old goalkeeper for South Korea, is facing a poignant personal sacrifice as he gears up for his fourth World Cup appearance. The veteran player has expressed deep regret for missing the birth of his first child, a moment he wished to share with his wife.
As the South Korean team prepares for their opening match against the Czech Republic in North America, Kim is focused on his performance, hoping to extend his 86 international caps. "I am really sorry that I couldn't be with my wife for the birth," he told reporters in Mexico, where the tournament's group stage will take place. "I want to bring home good results from here as my presents," he added, highlighting his desire to contribute positively despite the personal cost.
Currently playing for FC Tokyo in Japan, Kim is expected to be the starting goalkeeper, surpassing Jo Hyeon-woo in coach Hong Myung-bo's selection. "I've played at every World Cup thinking it could be my last," Kim reflected, as he acknowledged the significance of this tournament. "Given my age now, this one really does feel like my final one," he remarked, underscoring the weight of the occasion.
In addition to the Czech Republic, South Korea will also face South Africa and co-host Mexico in Group A, adding further stakes to Kim's World Cup journey.
