Alabama Softball Dominates LSU Behind Jocelyn Briski’s Super Regional Masterpiece

There are big wins, and then there are statement wins.

Friday night in Tuscaloosa felt like a statement from start to finish.

No. 1 seed Alabama opened Super Regional play by completely overwhelming LSU in a 7-0 shutout at Rhoads Stadium, and the biggest reason why was once again Jocelyn Briski. The junior ace was absolutely untouchable after the first batter of the game, delivering one of the most dominant postseason performances Alabama softball has seen in years.

LSU came out swinging and opened the night with a leadoff double that briefly gave the Tigers some momentum. But after that? Nothing.

Briski slammed the door shut immediately.

The Alabama right-hander retired the next 21 straight batters and carved through LSU’s lineup with 11 strikeouts in a complete-game one-hitter. On a night where the pressure was massive and the stakes were even bigger, Briski looked calm, confident and completely in control from the circle.

Honestly, it felt like the entire stadium knew LSU was in trouble once Alabama settled in during the first inning.

And the offense made sure Briski had more than enough support.

The Crimson Tide wasted no time jumping on the Tigers early. Jena Young got things rolling in the opening inning and Alabama capitalized on LSU mistakes to grab a quick 2-0 lead. Audrey Vandagriff added an RBI single, and from there the momentum completely shifted in Alabama’s favor.

Then came the power.

Alexis Pupillo crushed her 18th home run of the season in the third inning, sending another roar through Rhoads Stadium and extending the lead to 3-0. The home run continued what has been one of the most explosive offensive seasons in Alabama softball history. The Crimson Tide now sits at 96 home runs on the year, just one shy of the 2012 team’s second-place mark in program history.

But the biggest swing of the night came an inning later.

With the bases loaded in the fourth, Jena Young delivered the knockout punch with a bases-clearing double that blew the game wide open and pushed Alabama’s lead to 6-0. Young finished with three RBIs from the leadoff spot and helped pace an Alabama offense that once again looked relentless from top to bottom.

The Tide finished with double-digit hits for the 20th time this season, and four different Alabama players recorded multiple hits in another complete team performance.

What makes this win even more impressive is the stage it happened on.

Super Regionals are supposed to be tight.

Stressful.

Competitive.

Alabama made it look anything but that.

The Crimson Tide improved to 29-17 all-time in Super Regional play and continued its dominance at home with a 24-6 record in Tuscaloosa. Alabama has now won 12 Super Regional openers in program history, and in nine of the previous 11 times that happened, the Tide went on to win the series.

This team now sits one win away from another Women’s College World Series appearance.

And if Alabama continues to pitch like this, hit like this and feed off this kind of energy from the Rhoads Stadium crowd, it is going to take an incredible effort to stop them.

Patrick Murphy said after the game that the atmosphere was incredible, and he was right. Friday night felt like postseason softball at its absolute best.

Now Alabama has a chance to finish the job Saturday afternoon in Tuscaloosa.

One more win.

That’s all that stands between the Crimson Tide and Oklahoma City.

Roll Tide.
