Analyzing the Chargers' Quarterback Lineup Ahead of the 2026 Season

As the Chargers gear up for training camp, it's time to examine their quarterback situation ahead of the 2026 season. The team's depth chart is taking shape, and here's a look at who might secure a spot on the 53-man roster.

Starting the lineup will be Justin Herbert, who endured a tough 2025 season due to a broken hand but nonetheless showcased his talent. Despite facing challenges from a battered offensive line, he managed to deliver a noteworthy performance. With a clean bill of health for 2026 and the addition of offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel's innovative scheme, Herbert is set to thrive. Surrounded by a revamped offensive line and a stronger supporting cast, he could be on the verge of an MVP-caliber season.

Backing him up will be Trey Lance, who has rejoined the Chargers on a one-year contract valued at up to $6.75 million. Last season, he made appearances in four games, including a start in the final matchup against the Broncos, where he recorded 226 passing yards and an interception, along with 85 rushing yards. Head coach Jim Harbaugh has shown faith in Lance's potential, viewing him as a valuable asset behind Herbert.

In contrast, DJ Uiagalelei is expected to miss out on a roster spot. After spending his entire rookie year on the practice squad, he signed a futures contract but still faces significant competition for the backup role. While his size and physical abilities are promising, the gap between him and Lance is considerable. As a result, Uiagalelei might be released during the final roster cuts, with the intention of placing him back on the practice squad.
