Andy Roddick Criticizes Fabrice Santoro's Dance Request to Aryna Sabalenka at French Open
This week, following her impressive victory over Naomi Osaka, top-ranked tennis player Aryna Sabalenka was approached by former player and current broadcaster Fabrice Santoro during a post-match interview. Santoro, referencing Sabalenka's popular warm-up dances, playfully suggested she showcase her moves on the clay court, telling her, “it is your choice” as the audience cheered.
In response to Santoro's request, Sabalenka humorously agreed, saying, “Only if everyone is dancing,” before she entertained the crowd with a twirl and a moonwalk at the French Open. While the moment delighted the live audience and quickly gained traction on social media, it did not sit well with Andy Roddick.
On his podcast, Served, Roddick expressed his discomfort with Santoro's request, stating, “It’s such a weird thing to ask. I don’t like it.” He elaborated on the pressure Sabalenka might feel, suggesting that if she declined, she could face backlash for not participating: “If Sabalenka’s like, ‘No thank you,’ then everyone’s like, ‘What you can’t play along? That’s no fun.’ It’s a lose-lose situation.”
Co-host Mike Hayden echoed Roddick's sentiments, arguing that while post-match interviews often aim to reveal players' personalities, asking Sabalenka to dance felt unprofessional. “I prefer something with a little more depth,” he remarked, questioning the need for such light-hearted content in those crucial moments.
As Roddick prepares to step into the commentary role for ESPN during Wimbledon next month, he continues to voice his opinions candidly, even when addressing fellow broadcasters' actions.
