Andy Roddick Defends Alexander Zverev’s Forehand Amid Criticism

Alexander Zverev, frequently recognized as the top player on the ATP Tour without a Grand Slam title, has a golden opportunity to alter that perception this Sunday. The German will compete against Flavio Cobolli in the French Open final, both aiming for their inaugural major championship.

Zverev’s tennis resume is impressive, featuring two ATP Finals victories, seven Masters 1000 titles, and an Olympic gold medal. However, despite previously reaching three Grand Slam finals, the elusive trophy has continued to evade him. He has achieved a career-high ranking of No. 2 in the world and has established a commendable career. Yet, one aspect of his game remains a point of contention for Andy Roddick.

On the 'Served' podcast, Roddick expressed his frustration with the ongoing critique of Zverev’s forehand. He remarked, “People criticize Zverev’s forehand, but it’s a criticism based in, can it get exposed against two players because you don’t hit clean winners off it all the time.” Roddick emphasized that while Zverev’s forehand may not be perfect, it surpasses that of many players on the tour. “That does not mean Zverev’s forehand is bad. That’s the thing that drives me crazy [people say] ‘Zverev’s forehand is bad’. No! His forehand is better than 80% of the Tour!”

Roddick elaborated on Zverev’s strengths, noting that if he can dominate his opponent's forehand corner, he puts himself in a strong position. He pointed out that Zverev's overall game is elite, which includes his movement, serve, and backhand, highlighting that critiques often focus too narrowly on specific shots.

As Zverev approaches the final, it’s worth noting that he has made his way through the tournament without facing any top-20 players, a fact that adds another layer to the narrative surrounding his performance. After a series of solid victories, including a decisive match against Jakub Mensik to secure his place in the final, Zverev is set to encounter Cobolli, marking this match as a significant test in his quest for a Grand Slam title.
