Angels Secure Catching Depth by Acquiring Tyler Heineman, Release Trey Mancini

The Los Angeles Angels have been actively seeking additional catching support following a series of injuries, and today they made a significant move by acquiring catcher Tyler Heineman. Heineman was recently designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays and was traded to the Angels for cash considerations, as reported by Anthony Franco from MLBTradeRumors.com.

To clear a spot for Heineman on the roster, the Angels designated Trey Mancini for assignment. This maneuver allows the team to avoid announcing a roster change today, although they will need to finalize Heineman's addition tomorrow. It is likely that Logan O’Porter will be sent back to Triple-A Las Vegas after serving as part of the catcher duo alongside Logan O’Hoppe for the past week. The Angels are currently dealing with the absence of their usual backup, Travis d’Arnaud, who has been sidelined by plantar fasciitis, alongside Sebastian Rivero, who recently underwent surgery for a hand injury.

Heineman, recognized primarily for his defensive skills, had a standout offensive season last year with a .289/.361/.416 batting line over 64 games with Toronto. However, his performance took a downturn this season, where he recorded a .154 average with just one home run in 87 plate appearances. Despite some playing time when Alejandro Kirk was injured, Heineman lost his backup position to Brandon Valenzuela upon Kirk's return.

Now out of minor league options, Heineman needed to clear waivers to be sent back down, prompting the Angels to act quickly in trading for him. The team will assume the remainder of his arbitration salary of $1.2375 million. Heineman is considered to be a solid receiver with a strong arm, traits that likely appealed to Angels manager Kurt Suzuki. If he can maintain his spot in the majors, Heineman will remain eligible for arbitration, providing the Angels with a comparable option to d’Arnaud before his injury, while also hoping to bolster the performance of their young pitchers.
