Angels Showcase Teamwork in Victory Over Dodgers
LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Angels demonstrated a well-rounded offensive effort on Sunday, defeating the Dodgers 13-5 at Dodger Stadium. Key contributions came from Sebastián Rivero, who went 5-for-5 with 6 RBIs, and Jo Adell, who hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning, sealing the win for the Angels.
This victory allowed the Angels (25-41) to avoid a sweep in their season series against the Dodgers (42-24), a feat they last accomplished in 2020. "I think there's always got to be a different dynamic. Hitting homers is hard in the Major Leagues, especially against a pitching staff like the Dodgers," said Angels manager Kurt Suzuki. "Having quality at-bats and then getting those homers later in the game was huge."
Rivero played a significant role early, contributing to four of the Angels' initial runs in the second and fourth innings, putting them ahead 4-1. Despite several blooper hits, his final two hits included an RBI single in the seventh and a double in the ninth, marking his first five-hit game since his time in the minors. "I'm just glad the team had great teamwork today," Rivero reflected. "Great at-bats, great approaches. There wasn't a single one of us that didn’t take a bad at-bat."
Leading 6-1 into the sixth, the Angels relied heavily on small-ball tactics, with three hits coming in 0-2 counts. However, tension arose when pitcher Jose Soriano allowed back-to-back homers, prompting the Angels to ramp up their offensive power. In the seventh inning, they erupted for six runs, highlighted by Adell’s two-run blast over the left field wall.
Nick Madrigal proved to be a formidable presence at the plate, exhausting Dodgers pitchers with lengthy at-bats, including a 14-pitch duel against starter Emmet Sheehan. "I got good pitches today; I just kept fouling them off," Madrigal noted. "I felt calm in the box. I just gotta thank God for keeping me calm."
The Angels extended their lead in the seventh with Zach Neto's three-run homer, further solidifying their dominance. "When we get a blast or two going, we're kind of feeling ourselves a little bit," Adell remarked. "I think everybody just did their part. The momentum was there all the way through the first pitch."
The Angels capped off their scoring in the ninth with Rivero's RBI double, rounding out a comprehensive team effort in a crucial win.
