Anthony Grant Leads Team USA to 30-Point Victory in Coaching Debut
On June 1, Dayton Flyers' head coach Anthony Grant celebrated a successful debut as head coach of Team USA, guiding the squad to an impressive 88-58 win over Argentina during the 2026 FIBA U18 Men's AmeriCup in León, Mexico. This marked Grant's first game in the head coaching role, having previously served as an assistant with the U18 team in 2008 and 2018.
The United States established dominance in the match by closing the first half with an 18-4 scoring spree. "Basketball is going to be a game of runs," Grant remarked on USA Basketball's website. He acknowledged Argentina's talent, stating, "They've got good players," and emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum throughout the game.
Looking ahead, Team USA will face Mexico on June 2 at 10 p.m., holding a perfect record of 5-0 against them historically. Following that match, the Americans will take on Brazil on June 4 at 5 p.m., a team that has yet to secure a victory against the U.S., with a record of 0-12. Brazil recently triumphed over Mexico with a score of 103-70.
If Team USA progresses beyond the group stage, they will compete in the semifinals on June 6, with the medal round scheduled for June 7. All matches are available for live streaming on YouTube.com/FIBA.
In the opening game, standout player Quentin Coleman, a University of Illinois recruit and the 26th ranked prospect in the 2026 class per ESPN, contributed significantly with 11 points and 15 rebounds. "His energy was contagious today," Grant noted, praising Coleman for his all-around impact on both defense and offense. Additionally, center Darius Wabbington and guard Adan Diggs, who are ranked 16th and fifth in the 2027 class, respectively, each added 12 points to the team's total.
