Arizona Cardinals Secure Cap Relief Following Key Date

Tuesday marked a significant milestone for various NFL teams regarding their salary cap management. This date was particularly crucial for those who released players under a post-June 1 designation, enabling them to gain cap relief. The Arizona Cardinals took advantage of this opportunity by parting ways with quarterback Kyler Murray, who was initially released after the league year commenced in March.

Murray's contract was set to impose a hefty $52.7 million charge against the salary cap. However, under the post-June 1 designation, this cap hit persisted until June 2. As a result, the Cardinals faced dead money costs totaling $47.5 million on Tuesday, which ultimately allowed the team to realize approximately $5 million in cap savings for the year 2026. The remaining dead money of $7.2 million will carry over into 2027.

Following his departure from Arizona, Murray signed with the Minnesota Vikings, where he is now earning the league-minimum salary of around $1.3 million. Meanwhile, the Cardinals remain responsible for the outstanding $35.5 million he was set to receive this season. Currently, Arizona has an estimated $35.1 million in available cap space, ranking them sixth overall in the league, according to Over the Cap.
