LSU Athletic Director Defends Timely Hire of Lane Kiffin Amid Criticism
The LSU Tigers faced backlash for poaching Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss just before the Rebels were set to compete in the College Football Playoff in December. In light of this, Congress is reviewing the Protect College Sports Act, which includes a provision dubbed the “Lane Kiffin Rule.” This rule aims to prevent coaches from engaging with other institutions while their current teams are still in season.
During a recent interview with WAFB 9 regarding the proposed legislation, LSU’s athletic director Verge Ausberry emphasized the necessity of making the hire when they did. He asserted that if LSU had hesitated in securing Kiffin, another program would have seized the opportunity. “I always tell people if we wouldn’t have hired Lane Kiffin, somebody else would’ve hired Lane Kiffin,” Ausberry stated. He elaborated that the timing was dictated by the current calendar, noting, “Don’t knock Lane Kiffin for what happened.”
Ausberry highlighted the importance of timing in the coaching landscape, particularly with the impending opening of the transfer portal and the recruiting period. “Unless they change the calendar, we’re going to always have this issue,” he added, mentioning that they are still reviewing the comprehensive 111-page bill to assess its implications.
Despite the circumstances, Kiffin expressed a desire to continue with Ole Miss but was attracted to what LSU offered, particularly the resources necessary for a sustained championship run. Ausberry’s remarks suggest that Kiffin was inclined to leave Ole Miss during its CFP run, regardless of LSU’s interest.
While it's uncertain which teams Ausberry believed would pursue Kiffin had LSU waited, it’s important to note that LSU was the most sought-after position during the coaching cycle. Florida, for instance, was not a serious contender for Kiffin when the LSU opportunity arose. Ultimately, LSU’s decision to act swiftly may have been influenced by the critical recruiting timeline.
