Árni Sveinsson Makes History as First Icelander to Qualify for U.S. Open

In Garðabær, Iceland, celebrations are underway as Árni Sveinsson has etched his name in history by becoming the first Icelandic man to qualify for the U.S. Open. The LSU rising junior achieved this remarkable feat by scoring nine under par over two rounds at the Lakes Golf and Country Club in Ohio during Golf’s Longest Day event.

Sveinsson's journey to qualification included a thrilling playoff alongside J.B. Holmes and Vaughn Harber, where he emerged victorious among four competitors for the final available spot. Davis Thompson had already secured his place in the tournament with an impressive score of eleven under par.

In addition to this historic qualification, Sveinsson is preparing for another significant event. He is set to represent Team International in the 2026 Arnold Palmer Cup at Tralee Golf Links in West Barrow, Ireland, next month.

Before heading to Ireland, Sveinsson will travel to Long Hill, where he will participate in the U.S. Open, the year's third major championship. His achievement marks a proud moment not just for him, but for Icelandic golf as a whole.
