Astros Struggle as Tigers Triumph 9-3
HOUSTON, TEXAS - On June 15, 2026, the Houston Astros faced a disappointing defeat against the Detroit Tigers, falling 9-3 at Daikin Park. Starting pitcher Kai-Wei Teng struggled once again, failing to make it through the fourth inning, which has become a concerning trend for the Astros (33-41). This marks the fourth consecutive outing where Teng has not completed five innings, and the second in a row where he hasn’t even reached the fifth.
In his brief appearance, Teng (L, 3-6) surrendered five earned runs on six hits, while also walking two batters and striking out nine. He notably allowed three home runs and hit two batters in the first inning alone, one of which loaded the bases and led to the Tigers' first run. According to Astros beat reporter Chandler Rome from The Athletic, Teng's velocity was noticeably down by nearly two miles per hour.
Detroit took control early, with Kevin McGonigle hitting a solo home run in the second inning, putting the Tigers ahead 2-0. In the third inning, Teng allowed two more home runs—first to Colt Keith, who hit a two-run shot, and then to Spencer Torkelson, extending the lead to 5-0. The Astros began to fight back in the bottom of the third when Isaac Paredes and Jose Altuve hit back-to-back home runs, narrowing the gap to 5-3.
Despite the Astros’ efforts, Teng was unable to last long enough to give the bullpen a break, with Steven Okert stepping in to handle the fourth inning. After navigating through a tough situation, A.J. Blubaugh took the mound in the fifth and allowed an unearned run following a passed ball, increasing the Tigers’ lead. Jayden Murray, recalled from the minors, later allowed two runs from another homer by Keith, who had a standout night with three home runs in total.
Tomorrow, Hunter Brown (1-0, 0.84 ERA) is set to return from the injured list to start against former teammate Framber Valdez (3-5, 4.40 ERA), while catcher Yainer Diaz is also expected to be activated. On a brighter note, Yordan Alvarez continued to impress, going 2-for-4 at the plate to raise his batting average to .328, leading the American League.
