Kelsey Plum Struggles in Sparks' Defeat to Valkyries
Sparks guard Kelsey Plum managed only nine points in a disappointing 78-58 loss to the Valkyries on Monday, marking her lowest scoring output of the season. Coach Lynne Roberts had previously noted that her team was still evolving, despite enjoying a recent three-game winning streak.
In this match, the Sparks (7-7) struggled significantly, particularly on defense, while their offensive efforts fell flat. They recorded their lowest scoring total of the season, hitting just 33.3% of their shots from the field. Plum, who had dazzled with a career-high 43 points in a previous game against Phoenix, was effectively contained by Golden State’s defense, led by Kaila Charles and Gabby Williams.
Plum fouled out early in the fourth quarter, having scored only four points in the third. She attempted just nine shots throughout the game, her fewest of the season. The only other instance of her scoring in single digits for the Sparks happened during another matchup against Golden State last year.
Adding to the Sparks' woes, Cameron Brink, who was the team's leading scorer with 10 points, injured her left ankle in the game's final minutes and required assistance to leave the court. The Valkyries (9-5) surged ahead early, finishing the first quarter with a 17-4 run and leading by as many as 24 points at one stage.
Despite a brief rally that cut the deficit to nine points midway through the second quarter, the Sparks were unable to maintain momentum, ultimately succumbing to a strong offensive display from the Valkyries, who shot 51.5% in the first half. The team also struggled from three-point range, hitting only three of 21 attempts.
As the Sparks prepare to face the first-place Minnesota Lynx (11-3) on Wednesday, they will need to address their defensive lapses and find ways to support Plum in their offensive strategy.
