Austria's Rangnick Emphasizes Vigilance Ahead of World Cup Opener
Austrian national team coach Ralf Rangnick highlighted the necessity of maintaining vigilance at the World Cup, especially after several top teams faced unexpected difficulties early in the tournament. In a recent press conference, he remarked, “It just goes to show once again how important it is to be on your guard right from the start.”
One of the most notable surprises thus far was Spain's disappointing 1-1 draw against Cape Verde. Other unexpected outcomes included Australia's solid 2-0 victory over Turkey and Switzerland's match ending in a 1-1 tie with Qatar.
Austria is set to kick off their World Cup journey against Jordan on Tuesday, and Rangnick expressed confidence that his players will approach the match with the seriousness it deserves. “No one on our team is taking this game lightly,” he stated.
This World Cup marks Austria's return to the tournament for the first time since 1998, a moment of pride for the team. Captain David Alaba shared his sentiments, saying, “It really means a lot that Austria is back after almost 30 years.” Alaba, who has enjoyed a stellar career with clubs like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, is also participating in his first World Cup.
While Austria is seen as a strong candidate to move forward to the knockout stages, the expectations are different for the debuting Jordanian team. Captain Ihsan Haddad noted, “The Italian team, which has won the World Cup four times, isn't here, but we are. We don't feel any pressure right now, but rather pride.” Coach Jamal Sellami echoed this sentiment, emphasizing, “We're here to learn and enjoy it.”
