With their record now at 37-35, the Arizona Diamondbacks secured a closely contested 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, bolstered by Pavin Smith's first home run of the season. The D-backs capitalized on strategic base-running and solid pitching from Ryne Nelson, who delivered seven innings while allowing just two runs.
Nelson’s performance marked a resurgence, as he struck out five batters, his highest total in a start since May 13. Despite giving up nine hits, he managed to avoid walks and was efficient enough to make it through seven innings for the fifth time in his last seven games. His impressive stretch at Chase Field has resulted in a 2.27 ERA over 35.2 innings.
The D-backs showcased savvy base-running to keep the game competitive. After falling behind 1-0, Geraldo Perdomo's heads-up play allowed him to advance to third base on a foul-out. This set the stage for Gabriel Moreno’s infield single, which tied the game. Later, Corbin Carroll's aggressive play in the fourth inning helped Arizona take a temporary lead.
The game took a pivotal turn in the seventh inning, when Smith connected on a change-up, sending it down the right-field line for a homer that put Arizona ahead for good. Smith also added a single, while Perdomo contributed with a crucial double, extending the lead to 4-2. Although Paul Sewald faced a late challenge by allowing a solo shot in the ninth, he secured his 18th save, maintaining the D-backs' slim advantage.
This victory puts the D-backs just half a game behind the three teams vying for the final NL wild-card spot. With another matchup against the Angels set for tomorrow, fans are eager to see if Arizona can continue their winning momentum.
