The Houston Astros entered their matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates with hopes of extending their winning streak. However, the Pirates had other plans, handing the Astros a disappointing 5-1 defeat in this decisive game.
The Pirates struck first, with Ryan O’Hearn hitting an RBI single in the opening inning off starting pitcher Kai-Wei Teng. After a shaky start, Teng managed to regain his composure, but the sixth inning proved to be his downfall. O’Hearn launched a two-run home run that effectively sealed the game for Pittsburgh. This impressive feat marked the Pirates' 11th consecutive game with a home run.
Oneil Cruz contributed significantly to the Pirates' offense, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances with two hits and two walks. The sole highlight for the Astros came from Isaac Paredes, who celebrated his milestone 100th career home run with a solo shot in the sixth inning. Despite the effort, Teng (3-4) took the loss after allowing seven hits and four earned runs over five innings.
Looking ahead, the Astros are eager for the return of Jose Altuve, which is expected soon. Astros announcer Todd Kalas noted, “Altuve brings an immediate presence to the lineup and a jolt to the clubhouse. His ability to get on a heater could take the pressure off Yordan, Walker, and Pena who have been carrying the team recently.” Altuve's comeback will be timely, as the Astros face a more manageable schedule in the coming weeks.
The Astros concluded their run through the N.L. West with a 6-9 record, including three victories against the Cubs during Memorial Day weekend. Collin Price made his debut for the Astros, reaching base on a walk during his first at-bat. Jeremy Pena has been on a hot streak, hitting safely in 11 of his last 12 games. Following Thursday's loss, the Astros have an 11% chance of making the playoffs according to MLB’s odds. Up next, they will host the Athletics and pitcher Jack Perkins, who has a 5.46 ERA, in a game celebrating Orbit's birthday.
